What is Engraving?

Engraving is the art of creating prints on a flat, hard surface, usually metal or wood. Engraving has a long rich history and used to create art, jewelry, pendants and decorations.

Dremel tools are built expressly for engraving, and its accessories provide additional functions and versatility.

What is a Dremel Engraver Used For, and What Does a Dremel Engraver Do?

A Dremel engraving is designed so you can make incisions on metal, wood and other surfaces. Unlike a typical engraving tool, Dremel allows you to create decorations and customize your work.

A Dremel engraving tool is ideal for DIY engraving, artistic projects and creating other objects. With a Dremel engraver utility you’ll be able to create markings on glass, ceramic, plastic and wood.

A Dremel tool is more than just an engraver as it can do a lot more, whether you’re a professional worker or for the artistic type.

Types of Dremel Engraving Tools

Dremel manufactures scores of engraving tools but they can be divided into the following categories.

  • Engraving Tool: these are tools specifically made for engraving. You may be able to use them for other tasks, but Dremel built them for engraving first and foremost.
  • Rotary Tool: these are all around tools for cutting, engraving, sanding, sharpening and so on. The tool comes with bits, accessories or attachments for those tasks.

If you only engrave on occasion, a rotary tool may suffice. But if you engrave often or for a living, a dedicated engraving tool is ideal.

Dremel Engraving Bits & Accessories

You can equip your Dremel with a lot of accessories, but the most important for engraving are the following.

  • Diamond Point: this is for hard surfaces and heavy duty work
  • Carbide Point: this is used for different types of surfaces
  • Number/Letter Template: essential for letter and/or number engraving
  • Other Engraving Bits: bits and cutters for fiberglass, abrasive surfaces and other materials are available
  • Other brands may come up with their own bits and accessories. Check first if they’re compatible with your Dremel

For the most part you’ll do fine with the diamond and carbide points and letter/number template. If you’re new to engraving there is no need to buy bits and accessories you won’t be able to use.

But if you’re a professional engraver or been using it for a long time, you may need more engraving bits like those above.

Dremel Engraving Attachments

There are few attachments for Dremel engraving tools, but that’s not a problem as there are a lot of bits and accessories available. Also, bits, accessories and attachments are used interchangeably.

If you’re using a rotary tool for engraving, you can use its attachments to enhance its function.

How to Choose a Dremel For Engraving

There are lots of Dremel tools for engraving so how do you find the right one? Here are some suggestions.

  • Type: choose between a rotary tool or a dedicated engraving tool.
  • Accessories: diamond and carbide points are suitable for beginners. If you want to cut, carve, sand and use other accessories, get an advanced tool.
  • Portability: a lightweight engraver is essential if you’re going to engrave for hours.
  • Ease of Use: the Dremel should be easy to use and with an ergonomic handle.
  • Purpose: what do you intend to use the tool for? Is it for engraving letters and numbers? Is it for decoration? This determines what type of engraving tool you will need.
  • Corded or cordless: this is basically about power vs. convenience.
  • Warranty: Dremel products are known for their warranty so this should not be a problem.
  • Long Term Use: if you’re going to use the tool for the long term, get a Dremel that’s for heavy duty use.
  • Feedback: some Dremel engravers get more positive reviews than others. Read them up to determine if it’s what you’re looking for.

How to Use a Dremel For Engraving

  • Familiarize yourself with the tool’s features. Most have just an on/off button and a speed button. A protective rubber component is included to protect the tip.
  • Choose the material you want to engrave on.
  • If your Dremel comes with several bits or tips, choose one that’s appropriate for what you’ll be engraving on.
  • Turn the engraver on.
  • Select the speed.
  • Hold the tool like a pen and start engraving. Use the letter/number template if your model came with one.

If you’ve got a rotary tool like the Dremel 4000, follow these steps:

  • Attach an engraving bit or cutter on the tool. A high speed cutter is suitable for metal engraving.
  • Plug the tool to a power source. If it’s cordless make sure that it’s charged.
  • Turn the rotary tool on.
  • Choose the speed. For detailing you can go for 15,000 RPM though rotary tool speed ranges vary.
  • If you’re not sure of the ideal speed, test each and go with the one you’re comfortable with.
  • Start engraving.

The steps above are general guidelines. Refer to your manual for specific instructions as the process may vary.

Final Verdict

Hopefully the information in my review guide was able to provide some insights on which product to buy. I also hope the general information about engraving tools is just as helpful.

Engraving takes more than skill as you also need a quality engraving tool to get the job done.  Dremel has gotten a solid reputation for quality products, and the three I reviewed here among the best.

Of the three, I pick the Dremel 2290 as the best Dremel for engraving. The other two are well made and won’t disappoint. But for versatility, ease of use and durability, the 290-1 has the edge.

At this time I am reviewing information as to what Dremel best suits my needs. I am looking for an overall Dremel that not only engraves but I can also do other items such as sanding, polishing, cutting, etc. With that in mind what Dremel do you recommend for me to purchase? If I go with a rotary type does it also come with the letter/number stencil or can I purchase it separately? I felt your article was very imformative, thank you.

Hey Eugene, you can buy stencils separately to use with your Dremel here.

As stated in the article here, I still think the Dremel 2290 is the best for you.
