Features to Look for in a Tacklife Rotary Tool

The Tacklife vs Dremel has been going on for a long time, and some say one is better than the other. Dremel is considered as the standard while Tacklife is the alternative, but it really depends on your needs.

Some tips for choosing Tacklife and rotary tools in general:

  • Power: the motor, HP, amp and volt determine the unit’s power. The higher the numbers the more materials you’ll be able to cut in less time.
  • Speed: Tacklife rotary tools come in either variable or multiple speeds. Some projects require fast speeds while others need it slow, so versatility is the keyword here.
  • Corded or Cordless: this comes down to power vs. convenience, so make sure the one you choose fits your current needs.
  • Ease Use: to be specific, the ease by which you can change the RPM and the other settings.
  • Accessories: some Tacklife rotary tools come with a hundred or more, while others have less than a dozen. Again the right number depends on what you intend to do.
  • Collet Size: the size is important if you’re going to use accessories with various sized attachments. For example, a 1/4 inch bit will need a collet with the specs.

What is a Rotary Tool Used For?

Tacklife makes different rotary tools, but they all share a common feature, versatility. By changing the bits, accessories, and attachments, you can use it for various functions, eliminating the need for other power tools.

A rotary tool can be used for:

  • Engraving, carving and detailing wood, metal and other materials
  • Cut objects in different shapes
  • Polishing dull surfaces like door knobs
  • Sharpening tools and objects
  • Glass etching
  • Rust removal
  • Remove old paint
  • Take out grout
  • Cut pipes
  • Create crafts
  • Shape fiberglass, plywood and other materials

Final Verdict

Tacklife has earned a reputation for providing quality and affordable alternatives to popular products. Their rotary tools are great examples of this.

The RTD35ACL and PCG01Bi are outstanding rotary tools. They’re easy to use, packed with a lot of features and easy to use. The RTD35ACL is better though as it is more intuitive to operate and great for multipurpose cutting.

Bottom line: Tacklife rotary tool reviews give the RTD35ACL and the PCG01B positive feedback, but the RTD35ACL is better. It’s got more accessories, more power and does everything the PCG01B can, only better.

Dremel 7700 Cordless Rotary Tool Review : Be Free Without a Cord

Dremel already offers a cordless rotary tool in the Dremel 8220. However, you may be wanting to get something more powerful. This Dremel 7700 cordless rotary tool review takes a look at one of your options.

I put this tool through its paces and I am very impressed with what I saw.

Highlighted Features:

  • The cordless feature makes it an ideal tool for a wide variety of jobs that reach into awkward places.
  • The toolset on it is a bit limited, but it performs a good share of jobs like trimming dog nails and the like.
  • The removable batteries are pretty powerful and can be convenient.
  • The simple two-speed setting makes operating the device a breeze.
  • The charger is pretty accurate on its charge.

Features

Cordless

The most important feature it has is the fact is it’s cordless. This Dremel 7700 review would be incomplete if that wasn’t mentioned.

The main thing to remember about being cordless is that it allows people the freedom to use it in various situations. For example, if I need a grinder or polisher that can fit well under the sink, I would reach for this product.

Two Speed Settings

When I work with rotary tools, I appreciate the fact that not all speeds are good for the tools. For example, go too fast with a grinding head, you’ll end up grinding it down.

This is why I appreciate the two-speed setting on this device. Either put it at 10,000 RPM or the faster 20,000 RPM for your needs.

Removable Battery

The main limitations of cordless devices is the battery. Though the battery life has improved over the Dremel 7300, it is still a battery.

However, there is a neat innovation with this product. You can now remove batteries and replace them for continued use. With unused batteries put in the Dremel 7700 charger, you can charge batteries while you are working.

3-Hour Charger

Speaking about the charger, it pretty nice this time around. Considering it powers up a 7.2V battery, three hours is a good time.

Besides that, the charger has a nice LED light to indicate the charge level. You can opt to start using the battery before the full charge and you’ll know how much charge there is inside the battery.

15 Accessories

The Dremel 7700 accessories may not be as numerous as other product packages but they are still impressive. A surprising thing about it is that these accessories make this the best rotary tool for dog nails.

This is thanks to the unofficial Dremel dog nails attachment, the sanding roll. Instead of trimmers, a lot of dog owners use the sanding tool to grind down the claws of their favorite pooch.

What I Like

  • One of the unintended pros is that this is the first Dremel for dog nails with many reviews saying it’s the better option over clippers.
  • There is no question about how to use it or how to change bits since it’s all pretty simple to operate.
  • The small size helps it fit in a wide variety of spaces.
  • The powerful battery lets me work for a long time.

What I Didn’t Like

  • The device is limited only to 20,000 RPM which is disappointing.
  • The limited accessory set that comes with the device can be a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

How do I use this to trim dog nails?

It’s pretty simple actually. Just use the sanding roll attachment that comes with it.
The main procedure is to slowly grind down the long toe nails. The gentle grinding at the lower speed level won’t hurt the dogs at all. However, be sure that the tool is far from fur so it won’t get entangled with the tool.

How powerful are the batteries?
They are 7.2 Ni-Cad batteries and they are pretty powerful. Even at less than a full charge they can deliver a fast turn on the tool.

Final Verdict/Conclusion
This Dremel 7700 cordless rotary tool review should give you a good idea of what to expect when you buy this tool. This is a good investment even with a limited toolset.

You can use it from trimming dog nails to cutting metal. The simple operation makes it even more useful. Overall, I would recommend buying it.

Solar Panel System

The 12v battery has become very popular and is now used in bikes, cars, boats, recreational vehicles etc.

And now these batteries are being used in solar panels as well. But what’s the right solar panel needed to charge a 12V battery? Apart from the size you also need to determine how many panels are required.

What Type of Solar Panels Do You Use?

The short answer is it depends on the type of solar panel set up you have and the battery’s design. The following information gives you an idea of how 12v battery charging works with solar panels.

If you’re off the grid – use batteries or on a solar-powered RV – you’ll want solar panels that are compact and portable. Majority of RVs come with 12v batteries, and you can use mounted/fixed, flexible or folding solar panels.

What is the Right Size Solar Panel to Charge a 12v Battery?

The right size is one or more bendable/flexible/rigid/folding solar panels in the 100 to 120-watt range. This is usually enough in most cases.

Keep in mind that size may also refer to the volts and watts (output) and the surface area size.

Knowing the surface area size is necessary to determine how many solar panels you can install on it. For 12v battery charging however, the output is more vital.

To find the correct solar panel size for a 12V battery, two things are needed:

  • How many amp hours (a/h) it must replace daily to charge fully. You can find the battery’s a/h on the manufacturer website.
  • How many volts are required? A typical 12v battery requires about 13.6 volts for a full charge.

How to Find the Watt Hours Needed to Charge a 12v Solar Panel Battery

Now that you know these figures, you can determine the number of watt-hours that is required to charge a 12v battery. There are 3 steps.

  • Determine the number of sunlight hours that shine on the panels.
  • Multiply the voltage of the battery by the amp hours. So if the amp hours is 110, the formula is 12v x 110 A/h = 1320 watt-hours.
  • To figure out the number of solar panel watts you need, divide the number of available sunlight hours with the watt-hours. So if you get 6 hours of sunlight the formula 1320 divided by 6 = 220 solar panel watts.

So you require 220 watts solar panels. But majority of solar panels don’t generate maximum output in spite of what the numbers claim.

So if the figures say you need 220 watts, get 240 to 260 solar panel watts to make p for any shortage. Here are some options to get those 220 watts.

  • 3 x 100-watt flexible solar panels is sufficient to get 260 watts
  • A single 100-watt flexible solar panel generates approximately 19 volts as it runs
  • Majority of flexible solar panels come in 50 or 100 watts

Off-Grid Solar Panel 12v Battery Charging

Three options are available, fixed, flexible and folding. We went over this a bit earlier, but now it’s time to look at them in detail.

Folding Solar Panels

Folding Solar Panels

These are available in small and large sizes, though the right size depends on your needs..

The big folding panels have about 80 to 20 watts. A steel stand keeps it up and is designed to fold out. These solar panels are equipped with a solar controller to charge a single 12v battery.

Small folding solar panels cannot charge a 12v battery as they only have about 6 to 30 watts. You can find 20-watt models and that should be enough to charge lights, smartphones, tablets and USB devices.

Folding solar panels are ideal because they’re easy to setup, portable and mostly assembled already. The connectors, cables and controllers are easy to configure.

Mounted/Fixed Solar Panels

Fixed solar panels can’t be bent. You mount them on rooftops or RVs, anywhere with a flat surface.

A 100 watt fixed solar panel has sufficient voltage for one 12v battery. Like folding solar panels you’ll want to use a solar controller with four-stage cycling to safeguard the battery.

They’re usually made from poly-crystalline or mono-crystalline with aluminum framing. Fixed solar panels are also widely available and cost-effective.

Flexible Solar Panels

Flexible solar panels are portable and flexible, usually up to a 30-degree arc. This makes it the ideal choice for irregular surfaces.

Some flexible solar panels have 100 watts with up to 18 volts, more than enough for a 12v battery charge.

If you’ve got a solar controller you’ll be able to use the battery on home roofs, cars, RVs, boats and cabins. The biggest benefit of flexible solar panels is how quickly you can install it.

Why Use a Solar Charger Controller?

A solar charger is ideal if you’re going to use a panel with more than 5 watts. A charge controller also prevents battery discharges in low lit environments.

A solar charger controller also enhances charging quality and prevents overcharging.  A well-designed solar charger controller also comes with pre-installed blocking diodes to improve performance.

A solar charger controller has many functions, but basically, it works like an on/off switch. It allows power to get in the battery and cuts off access when the 12v battery is charged.

Photovoltaic panel ratings are in watts while solar controller ratings are in amp. So if you have a solar controller at 6 amps, it’s compatible with solar panels up to 70 watts.

Solar panel output is measured in watts. On the average, a 15-watt solar panel produces 3600 coulombs (1 a/h) with an hour of sunlight.

Solar powered shed: Basic solar setup

Final Verdict

In the end, figuring out the solar panel size to charge a 12v battery comes down to numbers. As shown here it’s not really hard to do once you know what figures to work with. You can avoid a lot of potential problems by figuring out in advance how much watts or amp hours you will need.

What is a Dremel Alternative?

These are tools, attachments and/or accessories which are marketed as alternatives to Dremel. They come in different styles and forms but generally:

  • These products have many of the same features and accessories as Dremel.
  • They are usually more affordable.
  • These are all purpose tools that cut, grind, sharpen, etc.
  • These companies provide counterparts to most if not all the Dremel tools.
  • These alternatives are comfortable to use and have many of the benefits that Dremel tools offer.
  • They’re designed for long term and extended use.

Types of Dremel Alternatives

These are the most common types of alternative tools.

  • Rotary Tools: these are all around tools for cutting, polishing, sanding, grinding and so on. These alternative products come with all kinds of accessories to complement your toolbox.
  • Saws: these saws range from the bench top and they are designed to go through metal, plastic, wood and other materials. These saws are also as precise as their Dremel counterparts.
  • Multipurpose Tools: these are used for different tasks and ideal for the DIY buff. It is also for you if you’re looking for a precision tool that can multitask.

Dremel Alternative Bits & Accessories

  • Flex Shaft Attachment: for delicate and precision work.
  • Diamond bits: these are used to work on steel, mirror, glass, aluminum and ceramic tile.
  • High Speed Cutters: for use on bookboards, wood, polymer clay and other surfaces.
  • Sanding: two components are provided, the sand bands and the sand drum. Just put the band on the drum and replace when it’s worn out. Sanding bits are good for wood, polymer clay, Plexiglas and aluminum.
  • Cutting Wheels: different types are available, ranging from fiberglass to abrasive and cut various materials.

How to Choose a Dremel Alternative

  • Determine Your Needs: what type of tool do you need? Is it a cutting tool? A saw? A rotary tool? Think of the projects you’ll be working on and what tool best suits it.
  • Portability: the tool should be lightweight so you’ll be comfortable using it for long stretches.
  • Ease of Use: even the most powerful tool is useless if it’s difficult to use. An intuitive design is preferable.
  • Affordable and with good customer support.
  • Versatility: it is unlikely that you’ll use the tool for cutting or grinding only. Consider a rotary tool with several accessories so you don’t have to buy another tool.
  • Easy Accessory Change: companies use different types of mechanisms to change accessories. Keyless and tooless designs are the most convenient.
  • Adjustability: well designed rotary tools have knobs or dials to control the speed.

Features to Look For in a Dremel Alternative

  • Dremel Compatibility: most bits and accessories are designed to work with Dremel, so make certain that tool is compatible with the brand. This becomes even more important if you’ve got Dremel bits and accessories you want to use.
  • Power: look at the amps and the horsepower. The higher the number the more powerful the tool is. If the HP isn’t available the amp alone will do.
  • Speed Range: rotary tool speed is measured in RPM (revolutions per minute). Higher speed provides more options and control.
  • Attachments and Accessories: it’s not the number that matters here, but if they’re useful and practical.
  • Carry Case: a storage case is necessary if you’ve got a hundred accessories or so.
  • Corded vs. Cordless: there are pros and cons for both so go with the one that matches your requirements.

Final Verdict

I chose these 8 products because they’ve been proven to work and excel in various works.  If Dremel tools aren’t to your liking or you just want to try something different, these products can do the work for you. Yes there are a lot of alternatives but I chose these as they stand out.

As good as the 8 are, I can say the Tacklife RTD35ACL Rotary Tool Kit is the best Dremel alternative. The tool is easy to use, durable and is versatile enough to for crafting, DIY and professional work. Add the accessories and it’s a winning combo.

What is Wood Carving?

Even if you have the best Dremel tool for wood carving, it’s not gong to do much good if you have no idea what it is about.

In simple terms:

  • Wood carving is a type of woodworking process where you use a tool to shape wood.
  • The term wood carving applies no matter what tool you use. As long as you are working on wood to shape it into something else, it’s wood carving.
  • There are different types of rotary tools and Dremel tools you can use to carve wood the way you want.

What Is a Dremel Used for in Wood Carving, and What Does a Dremel Do?

A Dremel is a tool that you use to carve wood. However, a Dremel can do a lot more than that. With this tool, you can cut, engrave, sand, polish wood, soft metal, ceramic tile, granite and other materials.

The word Dremel is used in a generic manner, i.e. all rotary and multipurpose tools are referred to as such. Dremel however, is a company that manufactures a wide array of rotary tools. Their rotary tools are the most popular products, but they make other cutting tools and equipment.

To answer the question above, you use a Dremel to carve, sand, cut and otherwise shape wood, metal, etc. By using this tool you’ll be able to mold the wood into the shape you want.

However, a Dremel is not just for carving and working on wood. We know them best for their rotary tools, but they also make saws, multipurpose tools and various accessories. They also produce various attachments for their tools.

The accessories and attachments Dremel makes are used to enhance their tools’ functionality. They have bits for carving as well as tools for cutting, drilling, soldering, sanding, sharpening, grinding, polishing and more.

Types of Best Suited Dremel Tools For Wood Carving

Rotary tools are the best for wood carving. These are versatile power tools that do more than just carve wood. You can use it for engraving, sanding, polishing, cutting and so on. The only limitation is the bit or attachment you use and of course, your creativity.

The Dremel tools reviewed here all have carving bits or attachments. These carving bits can be used for wood and other materials too. It is the chuck or collet that determines what type of bits and attachments you can use.

There are different types of Dremel tools, and they’re all known for their versatility. Even the most basic Dremel cutting tool can be used in different ways. However, the best tool for wood carving is still the rotary tool. As to which type is the most effective, that is what the reviews here are for.

Dremel Wood Carving Bits & Accessories

If you’re new to wood carving there’s no need to worry about accessories right now as those included in the tool will suffice. But if the standard bit is not enough, check the following out.

Note: these bits and accessories are for the Dremel 4000, but they should also work with other Dremel tools. Check your manual for specific bits and accessories for it.

Carving and Engraving Bits

These Dremel bits can be divided into two categories: high-speed cutters and diamond bits.

High-Speed Cutters

This is a tool bit that’s suitable for cutting soft wood. You can also use these to remove leftover material when you cut or carve wood. High-speed cutters can be used on the following:

  • Wood
  • Polymer clay
  • Linoleum
  • Bookboard

Diamond Bits

Diamond bits can be used on the following materials:

  • Steel
  • Mirror
  • Glass
  • Ceramic Tile
  • Bookboard
  • Aluminum

Other accessories that you can use with your Dremel 4000

  • Dremel 191 high-speed cutter: this is great for cutting soft wood. It’s also the ideal bit for cleaning drilled holes or when you’re cutting the interior.
  • Dremel 150 drill bit: this is a typical 1/8” drill bit for use on soft metals and wood. While it’s not directly related to wood carving, it’s a nice accessory to have specially if you’re going to drill pilot holes.
  • Dremel 407 sanding drum & mandrel: these are best used with 432 120 grit and 408 60 grit sanding bands. The 60 grit sanding bands is for soft wood removal while the 120 grit adds the finishing touch. The 60 grit is very aggressive so you have to be careful.
  • Dremel 411 and 413 sanding discs: these are for used for fine sanding.

How to Choose a Dremel for Wood Carving

  • A Dremel rotary tool is the most commonly used for wood carving. But consider a die grinder if you do a lot of heavy carving, cutting, grinding etc.
  • Some Dremel tools are more suited for metals and ceramic tile than wood. Make sure the tool is designed for wood carving.
  • The higher the amp power the thicker the wood the tool can cut and carve. Choose one that’s capable of meeting your needs.
  • Corded vs Cordless: a cordless Dremel gives you greater freedom of movement. Corded units are more powerful however.
  • Decide how much power your woodcarving needs. Beginners don’t need a lot of power. But if you wood carve for a living you’ll need a powerful Dremel tool.
  • Check the horsepower of the Dremel tool. If it isn’t given, check out the amps. The higher the amps, the more powerful it is.
  • Check the battery voltage if you’re going to use a cordless Dremel.
  • Portability: this is important especially if you’re going to use it extensively.
  • Weight: you have to strike a balance here. The more powerful the wood carving tool is, the heavier, and vice versa.
  • Speed: most Dremel tools have variable speed, but some have 1 to 2 speeds. Check the minimum and maximum speed too (in RPM).
  • Versatility: it is unlikely you will be using the tool just for carving alone. Fortunately, most of these tools can be used for carving, sanding, etc.

Features to Look For in a Dremel for Wood Carving

  • Power: power is measured in amps, horsepower or both. The higher the number for both, the more powerful the Dremel is.
  • Convenience: this includes weight, corded, cordless and ergonomics. That has already been covered so no need to go over them again.
  • Dust extraction attachment: look for an attachment or built-in dust collector to keep the unit running smoothly.
  • Carry case: a storage will come in handy if it’s a large tool or comes with several accessories. Small Dremel tools don’t come with any cases however.
  • Tool Free / Quick Accessory Change: either one of these is necessary so you can move from one task to another quickly.
  • Work Light: some Dremel tools come with work light. This is a good choice as it makes carving a lot easier. Even if your tool doesn’t come with one, make sure workspace has one so it’s easier to do your work.
  • Cord Length: if you’re going to use a corded Dremel, make sure the cord is long enough so you can move comfortably.
  • Control and Precision: a tool with variable speed provides you with the best option for adjusting the tool while you use it.
  • RPM: RPM (revolutions per minute) tells you the speed at which the carving tool works. The higher the RPM the more powerful it is.
  • Amps and Volts: volts and amps tell you how much power the wood carving tool has.

Tips for Using a Dremel for Wood Carving

  • Read the manual and use only as directed.
  • Your workplace needs to be well lit.
  • Use a workbench just in case your wood piece needs to be clamped down.
  • Change the Dremel attachment and accessory if necessary.
  • Prepare a design sketch and use it for reference.
  • Measure the wood and get more than you need in case you make a mistake.
  • Dremel comes with a lot of bits and accessories. They’re compatible with your product so use them if necessary.
  • Learn how to use the tool. Dremel tools have different features so that new Dremel may not work like your older model does.
  • Practice, practice, practice. That’s the only way you’ll get better at wood carving.
  • Use a high speed setting to prevent any carve bites.
  • Beginners should start with a small cutter head. Move up only if it’s necessary.
  • The best way to carve is to remove unwanted space.
  • There are no hard and fast rules when it comes to carving depth. It’s up to you.
  • Get rid of as much sawdust as you can. Too much sawdust makes carving difficult.
  • Buff or sand any rough areas. You don’t need to rely on carving alone to get that project done.
  • Retouch and go over the rough areas after you’re done the carving.
  • Always double check your measurements and guidelines before proceeding.
  • Learn Dremel safety practices.

Final Verdict

So there you have it, the top 4 Dremel tools you can buy. Compared to other wood carving tools the ones here, those tools won’t last long. By choosing any of the products here you’ll get better results.

But if I were to choose a winner it would be the Dremel 4000 6/50.  When it comes to wood carving you’ll need a tool with good speed, is precise and offers plenty of customization.  The 4000 6/50 does it better than the others here, so that’s why I pick this as the best Dremel for wood carving you can buy.
